“LET ME GET MY STUFF!” A SIMPLE PET SITTER CHECKLIST
Before you say, “LET ME GET MY STUFF,” make sure your pet sitter has the information they need. 👑
1. Write down the normal routine
Include meal times, food portions, bathroom breaks, and bedtime habits. Explain where supplies are stored.
“His food is in the kitchen” sounds helpful until your sitter discovers six containers and a dog supervising the investigation.
2. Leave clear contact information
Provide your number, a backup contact, your regular veterinarian, and the nearest emergency veterinary hospital. Explain what to do if you cannot be reached.
Keep identification and microchip registration details current, too. The AVMA recommends up-to-date identification as part of pet preparedness. (avma.org)
3. Explain each dog’s personality
Does one need space while eating? Is another nervous around unfamiliar people? What helps them settle?
If you have multiple pets, provide separate instructions. Matching faces on the family Christmas card do not mean matching preferences.
4. Share any veterinarian-provided instructions
If your dog needs medication or special care, leave the original labeled supplies and clear written directions. Arrange a demonstration beforehand when needed, and make sure your sitter is comfortable with the responsibility.
5. Schedule a practice visit
Let your sitter meet your dog and walk through the routine before you leave. Show them how doors, gates, leashes, and any pet equipment work.
A little preparation helps everyone feel more confident—including the four-legged manager.
And yes, requesting a picture update is perfectly reasonable. We need proof that the royal household is operating to standard. 😂
What is the funniest instruction you would have to leave for your dog’s sitter?
